On the hardness of maximum rank aggregation problems

چکیده
The rank aggregation problem consists in finding a consensus ranking on a set of alternatives, based on the preferences of individual voters. The alternatives are expressed by permutations, whose pairwise distance can be measured in many ways. In this work we study a collection of distances, including the Kendall tau, Spearman footrule, Minkowski, Cayley, Hamming, Ulam, and related edit distances. Unlike the common median by summation, we compute the consensus against the maximum. The maximum consensus attempts to minimize the discrimination against any voter and is a smallest enclosing ball or center problem. We provide a general schema via local permutations for the NP-hardness of the maximum rank aggregation problems under all distances which satisfy some general requirements. This unifies former NP-hardness results for some distances and lays the ground for further ones. In particular, we establish a dichotomy for rank aggregation problems under the Spearman footrule and Minkowski distances: The median version is solvable in polynomial time whereas the maximum version is NP-hard. Moreover, we show that the maximum rank aggregation problem is 2-approximable under any pseudometric and fixed-parameter tractable under the Kendall tau, Hamming, and Minkowski distances, where again a general schema via modification sets applies.

متن کاملAn Analysis of Rank Aggregation Algorithms
Rank aggregation is an essential approach for aggregating the preferences of multiple agents. One rank aggregation rule of particular interest is the Kemeny rule, which maximises the number of pairwise agreements between the final ranking and the existing rankings, and has an important interpretation as a maximum likelihood estimator. However, Kemeny rankings are NP-hard to compute. This has re...
متن کاملTrapezoidal intuitionistic fuzzy prioritized aggregation operators and application to multi-attribute decision making
In some multi-attribute decision making (MADM) problems, various relationships among the decision attributes should be considered. This paper investigates the prioritization relationship of attributes in MADM with trapezoidal intuitionistic fuzzy numbers (TrIFNs). TrIFNs are a special intuitionistic fuzzy set on a real number set and have the better capability to model ill-known quantities. Fir...
متن کاملSoft Computing-based New Interval-valued Pythagorean Triangular Fuzzy Multi-criteria Group Assessment Method without Aggregation: Application to a Transport Projects Appraisal
In this paper, an interval-valued Pythagorean triangular fuzzy number (IVPTFN) as a useful tool to handle decision-making problems with vague quantities is defined. Then, their operational laws are developed. By introducing a novel method of making a decision on the concept of possibility theory, a multi-attribute group decision-making (MAGDM) problem is considered, in which the attribute value...
متن کاملHow Hard Is it to Bribe the Judges? A Study of the Complexity of Bribery in Judgment Aggregation
Endriss et al. [1,2] initiated the complexity-theoretic study of problems related to judgment aggregation. We extend their results for manipulating two specific judgment aggregation procedures to a whole class of such procedures, and we obtain stronger results by considering not only the classical complexity (NP-hardness) but the parameterized complexity (W[2]-hardness) of these problems with r...
